Who's Next - A Cindarella Affair

September 24th 2008 20:56
Just what shoe should Cindarella slip her tiny toes into to win her handsome Prince this summer?

Standing among all the fabulous shoe designers in Who's Next in Paris, I just cannot possibly imagine just which of these would be the shoe... This season the shoemakers have taken us back in time away from the Cindarella ostentatious jewelled shoes to simply basics and comfort...

The glass heeled Cindarella stilettos of the time have been refined down to a maximum 3.5cm heel reminiscent of the 70's and pointed tips are the show piece. However, it appears that loafers, sailing shoes, espadrilles, roman sandals, summer clogs, a delicate sandal and the basic sneaker are instead the summer staples.

Colours are bold and slightly acidic with oversized floral patterns making their way to hessians and bi materials with ultra supple nappa, micro perforations or leather.

On a more glamorous front, there is one label that ignores all these rules and continues to pave its own way - Brazilian label - Melissa.

This is one favourite that never stops to impress. I had them on my first runway in Spring/Summer 06 when I first showcased my swimwear label MaraJoara. But with designers like Vivienne Westwood contributing to the Melissa fold, every season this label never fails to impress!

Past designers have included Edson Matsuo, Alexandre Herchcovitch, Zaha Hadid, Campana Brothers, Triton and Isabella Capeto.

They also believe that green is the new black with these locally made Brazilian shoes delivered by employees with higher than normal wages and extended benefits.

All of the shoes are made from MELFLEX plastic, a patented, hypo-allergenic, recyclable, and extremely flexible PVC. The shoes are also cruelty free, so they are made with no animal products. Melissa shoes also recycle 99.9% of factory water and waste, and overstock styles are recycled into new styles with only the darker coloured shoes having recycled material.

Today Brazil produces 800 million pairs of shoes a year. In 2007, the country exported 177 million pairs and its increasing by the year. Among the ten largest importing countries, five of the largest importers are in Europe - Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands.

Other fantastic Brazilian shoe designers to note are:
- LouLoux - Christiano Bronzatto - the Japanese are just crazy about his wedge heels covered with python and floral patterned leather...

- Zeferino - ballerina style shoes featuring patent plaiting
- Franziska Hubener - entirely handmade her shoes are the most exported designs in Brazil
- Fernando Pires - the former architect who is renown for his "diamond pumps"

But despite the palette of talent and creativity on offer I still cannot walk past a good Louboutin...
