Swimwear Trends 08/09

September 8th 2008 23:31
Fashion has finally turned full circle...Change is in the air, as swimwear designers follow the lead from iconic Speedo Swimwear Designer Gloria Smythe and the launch of her Speedo Minimates ready to wear collections in 1965....

How many pieces will you wear? Swimsuits, sarongs, skirts, wide leg pants ... Ready-to-wear and swimwear has now converged ...The beachwear sector has now moved to delivering more than merely functional garments. This change has taken place slowly, from beach accessories to a wide range of swimwear.

This season all the brands seem to have followed the instructions and given their own interpretation of glamorous elegance.

This season cleavage is highlighted and bare backs are complemented by simple touches of allure ie a glamorous bow around the neck.

There are two key purchases for the season - the foundation one piece - that fabulous investment piece that perfectly sculpts the body or the glamorous to die for frivolous purchase, the love-at-first sight cossie that we buy without another thought... Between the two lie endless possibilities, different outfits almost every day, and for different times of day too.

The latest concept is the swimsuit that covers more than it reveals. Many brands
are offering two-pieces that can be accessorised to become a onepiece, or sarongs that can be worn after hours as evening dresses.

This is the case with Carioca (France), LeesaLU and Seafolly Australia...

The one-piece can be worn as a bodysuit for a glamorous post-poolside look so that you can accessorise yourself to sophistication for the evening. Other brands go even further in the selection they propose, like the Dosed (Italy) collection made up of tunics, bags and scarves, with plenty of accessories to enhance the look.

Designers deliver their creativity through combining high-tech, subtle fabrics and trendy designs. Fabrics include soft suede effects, crochets and jerseys adorned with tiny details of crystals.

In terms of two-piece swimsuits, sixties pop prints and high-waist briefs from Panos Emporio (Sweden) and L’Aura Blu (Italy) accentuate the retro touch we all love.

Colours are intense and new combinations catch the eye: purple, which Ritratti (Italy) successfully combines with orange, while Valery (Italy) mischievously pairs
it with khaki! Mint green! Prints are bold and daring, featuring floral patterns inspired from the 50's and the hides of the wildest animals in the jungles...

Brands like Vaihana (Spain) and Agua Bendita (France) even offer customised
swimsuits...

Another beach, another look. A rallying sign for the new: the top is a bandeau
or triangle. Board shorts are worn on the bottom, the big trend of the season.

As a complement to the swimsuit, they set the tone, destination Cape Town: beach fashion with a twist; sporty and bold designs (Seafolly – Australia). Prints are mixed and matched for an explosion of intense colours: yellows and purples, underlined with black, geometric patterns, manga-style designs, block stripes and irregular stripes …

Interestingly attitudes to buying swimwear have also become more like those based on ready-to-wear. Outfits for the beach are planned and capsule wardrobes studied. A fabulous panama is styled with a sophisticated onepiece, exquisite beach jewellery and the must-have summer tunic.Whilst women across the world are still seeking the perfect swimsuit to enhance their shape., they are also aspiring to escape with styles, colours and shapes inspired from our favourite destinations...
